Arrived on "Ximilia" with KA and RN. Departed in late 1900 but current date & time indeterminate. Persons aboard (50-60?) are derived from multiple worlds and times. As far-fetched as this seems, this much seems to be the truth.
- We have been called here to gather "orbs" in order to gather the power necessary to alter our regrets. - It is possible to change one's regret, but it is not without price. (Mr. I) - Certain individuals have served upon the Ximilia for over a year. - Languages are translated automatically by a most curious device placed in the ear. Communications and technology are speedy and highly advanced. - Do not disturb the cleaning "staff".
Persons: Mr. F Ms. A/Mr. J β Ms. S G β Mr. I Dr. NG (???) Dr. M R [Followed by a smiley face.] Dr. MC Olivia (malicious?)
[A jumble of letters that don't make up any legible words, sometimes interrupted by a simple stick figure or two, follow. Decode the substitution cipher, and:
I'm not sure if V and D are trustworthy, if my regrets can truly be changed, or if it is even right to do so. K seems to agree. Still, I can't deny the opportunity. Nor could I leave K & R without an ally.]
G has, thankfully, provided old mission documents. The accounts are detailed, but they are rather lengthy; I will summarize them in future entries.
[On subsequent pages is a rough sketch of the layout of the ship, labeled with the names of rooms and wings. There's also now a photograph tucked safely within these pages, courtesy of Finn's thoughtful Christmas gift.
Eventually he goes back and underlines Olivia one more time.]
- The ship is malfunctioning and facing power failures. Messages are being sent astray to the wrong people. I've been trapped in the kitchen with Ms. H & in the simulation room with RN-- the latter was dangerous & may have ended in disaster if not for Mr. F's timely help. - In the simulation room, Olivia appeared to RN and myself as a shimmering, glass-like creature with humanoid shape. As she conversed with the image of a bleeding man (50-60s white, bearded, blind in one eye & bearing prominent scar) before us, she then cut off the supply of oxygen to the room.
"Find people who can get them all back. Keep them from being hurt by it. Should have never..."
[He also goes back to underline the note about the cleaning staff, then provides some brief descriptions of the crew members in the photograph in the North Wing.]
[Added to the list of persons are the following names:]
"Kovacs" "Kestrel" Ms. H
[The notes continue:]
Per Kestrel: "Olivia's sole purpose as an AI is to protect the crew aboard the Ximilia and to help us get the orbs... It's a containment protocol for the orbs. The Ximilia was specifically built to contain the orbs, but the protocol to contain them was erased and the station isn't the one restraining the orbs anymore. [Olivia] wrote us a new protocol."
Per RN: "Allegedly, the previous crew had actually succeeded in gathering all the orbs up, but were betrayed by some of their own before they could see their regrets undone." He theorizes that something was returned from this crew's last planet to corrupt the ship and disperse the orbs. [Along the edge of this line, in a new pen:] See V note. Orb affectation to Olivia & previous crew. Containment?
[And, on another page:]
Per V: "Olivia cannot be trusted. Her programming hasn't changed from its corrupted state. If the code she created is used for the orbs again, all that will happen is a repeat of what we already went through. Do you think Degar has been spending all of his energy containing the orbs all this time for fun? No, it's because that way, we can be sure the orbs aren't affecting anyone. That the barrier holds. If we hadn't done that, if he hadn't done that, all of you would be dead already."
The words "it is not without price" are now underlined twice on page one. The current page number's written above it like a footnote.]
- loss of memory, senses, general awareness - gross distortion of physical shape - confusion of identity (returned following incident) - violence, even to allies (person in question expressed deep apology)
There are also a few loose pages of pro/con notes for classes and spells. There might be some math. He may be illegibly doctor-handwriting arguing with himself underneath some of the spell descriptions. These are all folded up neatly, though, to hide how jumbled they are, as well as to stuff them into this section.
The decisions he's landed on for this mission are also listed in here, minus... a name... and backstory... ]
We received the information for our first mission today! I cannot help but to await it with anxious excitement. I suppose I'm about to find out whatever it is a warlock does in such a world?
[A somewhat battered parchment map of Alydhion and surrounding areas, with a few spots marked-- namely, Elindes and Aberington are circled. Scribbled on the back:]
- Dweyre: former Songbird leader. Degar's sibling. Killed by ambush of wyverns (per Fribbington). Succeeded by Jun Shortaxe. - The Brigade sought to find the heirloom once it was stolen by the king. Elia Roundtree (relationship to Dweyre?) struck Jun with a spell and injured him. - Who is the dragonborn? Where is the orb? - Nina Darkwood?
[On a separate scrap of paper is a short note, addressed to... a blot of ink. A purple flower is pressed flat by the journal's pages, sticking to the note.]
I know that I needed the information, but perhaps it was wrong of me to push F. I understand how she must feel: wouldn't you? Waiting so long for a reunion that may never even come? I pray she may find peace, even amid uncertainty.
(There was fantastic ale, and a performance by yours truly that I only wish you could have seen.)
[Encoded: I think of you often. I miss you, my dear.]
[Although the actual conclusion to the mission is briefly summarized, the bulk of his notes for the mission in February are a lengthy, highly technical collection of scientific notes regarding the extraction of dremnin venom and the development of its antidote.
