As his world's Watson, Yujin seems to be a loyal and true Victorian gentleman. He stops at nothing to ensure his loved ones' safety and success, and is still keeping promises to long-dead friends: once his loyalty is earned, it's for life. Interestingly, however, this loyalty isn't necessarily honest. Time and time again, Yujin bends the law and conceals the truth in the service of those he loves. About the only person he's completely transparent with is his partner, Herlock Sholmes. He is willing to break and manipulate rules for the greater good if he needs to be... which is often, in a canon fraught with political landmines. In short, even if he's going through unconventional and winding avenues to keep his promises, Yujin's word is always his bond.
Needless to say, Yujin's also strategic and politically-minded. As a diplomatic advisor to the Japanese government and a renowned academic, he has to be. One of his best skills is networking; his personable and (seemingly) trustworthy attitude makes it easy for him to make friends in high places. He knows just where and when to pry, as well as when to just smile and nod. Sometimes his ideas are unconventional, too: when his student and daughter's best friend is accused of murder, he convinces Susato to crossdress so a "male" lawyer can be Rei's defense. And although he's not one to abuse his influence, he absolutely knows how to throw it around if it's needed: for example, he's able to bend rules for Ryunosuke simply by telling him to give his name to the right people.
At heart, Yujin is a visionary. He dreams of medical advancement as a doctor and professor, certainly, but more than that, he hopes for progress. He's seen firsthand the damage outdated practices and ideals have done in his generation-- for example, sexism has hampered his daughter's success, clinging to tradition has hindered his country's growth, racism in Britain has only enabled the kind of corruption that took a friend as a scapegoat. He is bold enough to hope for a brighter future, even if only his children and students get to see it. All his hard work and mentorship to others is done with this dream of the future in mind, particularly in the many opportunities he provides Kazuma and Susato.
Unfortunately, Yujin is also secretive. Although sometimes warranted-- his knowledge of state conspiracy is dangerous-- it's become habit, leading him to hide when he shouldn't. Most notably, he lies to his children: he tells Kazuma his father Genshin took ill when he was really falsely convicted of murder, and he lies to Susato that he's taken ill for fear that she'll become an assassination target in Britain. Although he's well-meaning-- he always lies to protect someone-- keeping secrets like this often causes more trouble than it averts. Kazuma's lack of trust in Yujin, for example, is what pushes him away and towards the manipulative Seishiro Jigoku, who turns him into a would-be political assassin.
Yujin's also repressed. He's an emotional man, born into a traditional era; he is warm and polite, but this warmth is carefully controlled within the boundaries of formality. Much as he believes in progress, he cannot operate outside the confines of respectability himself. Although he took Kazuma in at 14 and sees him as family, he's formal with him in public and never refers to him as his son, both due to Meiji-era attitudes on adoption and to respect Kazuma's lineage. He's also staunchly feminist and implied to have anti-establishment sympathies, but can't voice either... meanwhile, he extends every possible opportunity to Susato and respects Kazuma's open mind. There's far, far more to him than he reveals at first glance, but Yujin can't and won't always show it himself for propriety's sake. At least, not without Sholmes by his side. He truly comes alive while recklessly solving mysteries in a way he never shows anywhere else, showing something deeper just below his composed surface.
Finally, under it all, Yujin is a mournful man. From his wife's early death, to his failures as a father, to the unjust conviction of his friend Genshin, grief and regret hang over him-- even moreso post-canon, knowing friends have also betrayed him. Much as he carries on through his day to day, his protective and loyal nature are a reflection of this grief. As is his parenting. Offering Susato and Kazuma opportunities is genuine, but it's done almost as penance for what he perceives to be failing them: he was too deep in depression to raise Susato until she was 6, and hiding the truth from Kazuma damaged their relationship. He's mildly self-deprecating and can't let go of the what-ifs-- maybe he could've been a better doctor, father, friend, and so on.
Powers/Abilities:
Yujin is a doctor and professor of forensic pathology, a sharp investigative assistant, and a particularly excellent tap dancer. Additionally, he has some basic hand-to-hand abilities (Susato Yujin Takedown, anybody?) and is familiar with the use of firearms circa 1900, though neither skill could be considered above average. Otherwise, he's a perfectly ordinary human man with no superhuman abilities.
Regret:
Yujin regrets not taking a firmer stand while performing the autopsy of Klint van Zieks 10 years ago. He was a coroner's assistant at the time, and although he wasn't personally responsible, the evidence that was forged during this autopsy (a ring placed in van Zieks' stomach by John Wilson) was the decisive evidence that led to his friend Genshin Asogi's false conviction for the Professor serial killings. If given the opportunity, he wishes he could speak out or catch the forgery-- as he'd been looking away to grab a scalpel when the ring itself was planted.
Suitability:
On a practical level, Yujin's an easy choice for the team. He's a mature man with a good deal of life experience. He's intelligent, resourceful, and quick to think on his feet, especially when it comes to remaining diplomatic in foreign situations and locales. Additionally, though Mikotoba appears to be buttoned-up and on straight-and-narrow all the time, in reality he's perfectly willing to manipulate loopholes in the law or even to blatantly break it for the sake of the truth and what is actually right and just. He'd be perfectly happy getting in trouble or sneaking around for the sake of the team's missions, if it were necessary.
And, of course, he's one of Japan's leading experts on forensic medicine in his canon and is a voracious enough of a learner to pick up on additional skills and developments in a new world, especially if it's to assist his team. Also, he is no stranger to having to provide emergency aid in a pinch: he's spent years patching himself and Herlock Sholmes up from a number of scrapes, and he's safely delivered a baby during a birth risky enough to claim the mother's life. Furthermore, he's a supportive and kind mentor and is happy to be a voice of reason or someone to lean on in any situation, particularly to younger people. His knowledge, capacity to learn, and his steadfast, reliable attitude would make him a very valuable medic and mature teammate to keep around.
On a personal level, Yujin's regret is one he has held close for a very long time. Particularly post-canon, it digs at him: he was in the right place at the right time, but didn't have enough decisive proof to prove Genshin Asogi's innocence. This event spun out into a series of events that would go on to harm and even kill many people through government corruption and to plant a seed of bitterness and revenge in Kazuma Asogi, who Yujin, in spite of himself, does count as a son. Even if he isn't totally sure whether his regret could be changed, he would do anything to protect his family, and the dear friends he counts as family-- including literally defying the English AND Japanese Supreme Courts?!-- so he'd be more than willing to work with the team for even the ghost of a chance to change the winds of fate.
Inventory:
The clothes on his back, a traveling trunk containing a week or so's worth of basic toiletries and semi-formal Victorian suits and menswear, one formal set of kimono / hakama / haori, a a few unwieldy volumes of medical textbooks from 1900-ish, some loose leaf tea from a Miss Iris Wilson, and a steamship ticket from London to Tokyo.
